For years, I believed hard work, constant learning, and integrity would naturally lead to security, recognition, and choice. I stayed late, worked weekends, invested in my skills, and became the person organizations relied on. My work created value—but that value did not always translate into greater freedom or stability for me.

A recession, furloughs, a reorganization, and eventually a layoff forced me to ask a different question: What would it look like to stop waiting for a system to reward me and start taking greater ownership of my expertise?

Moving into contract work opened a new chapter. It gave me exposure to different organizations, leadership styles, and ways of working. It also taught me that freedom is personal. It may mean more income, more time, work that brings you joy, or the ability to serve people you care about. Money can support freedom, but it does not define it.
